so one of my coworkers is currently doing grad school interviews and came back from one a bit disgruntled. he explained that he was speaking with a professor, it was proceeding normally and the professor said they were gonna move to the next phase of questions. then asked “so, do you believe in free will?”
understandably, my coworker was surprised to get this question while interviewing for a cellular and molecular biology program and got flustered. however, i think this is totally fair game. in fact, i think we should actually take advantage of the “do you have any questions” part of interviews to ask the interviewer existential and personal questions. Like yes, yes i do some questions. whats the meaning of life? do you have a good relationship with your father? do any of our choices matter, including the one that decides me acceptance to your phd program?
#poor guy was so upset when he was telling me and our postdoc friend#but me and postdoc were just coming up with worse questions and also discussing the molecular basis of free will#also. we decided that since phd is Doctor of Philosophy this question was totally acceptable
